Located between the modern city and the Valley of the Temples, it houses precious treasures. The center of the museum, built in the 60s, was born from the merger of the new buildings designed specifically for the museum and the restored buildings of the fourteenth century Convent of St. Nicholas, where there are a library, a conference room and auditorium .
The museum illustrates the history of Agrigento ancient and territory historically associated with it, from prehistory up to the stage of Hellenization.
 
Its 18 rooms contain numerous interesting findings from Agrigento and surroundings. The oldest part of the collection comes from the Civic Museum. Other material comes from the archaeological museums of Palermo and Syracuse. But the most important part of the collection is made up of the materials found in the excavations conducted by the Superintendency of Agrigento.
The museum has a vast collection of vases Penthouses, including the famous Crater of Dionysus; you can also see the famous marble statue of Ephebus of Agrigento, an athlete who lived in the 5th century AD. And ‘the most visited museum in all of Sicily.
